Abstract

During a preliminary cruise to the FAMOUS area (Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge) in 1972, a fragment of dredged pillow lava was recovered with some bioclastic pelagic material attached to its vitreous border. The petrographic composition of this lava corresponds to a plagioclase-olivine basalt. The thickness of the palagonitic rim on the pillow gives an age between 370,000 and 615,000 years BP and the microfauna indicates an age between 700,000 years BP and Recent. The petrological and micropaleontological correlations agree: the dredged sample probably comes from the base of a fault scarp situated on the eastern wall on the Axial Valley, at 5 km at least from the axis of the ridge.
