Abstract

A tentative foraminiferal biostratigraphic synthesis of certain Triassic formations of north and east-central Iran suggests that: -The lower calcareous member of the Elika formation of north Iran is the stratigraphic equivalent of the Sorkh Shale formation of east-central Iran and of Skythian age. -The intermediate dolomitic member of the Elika formation could represent the stratigraphic equivalent of the Shotori dolomite formation of the Tabas-Nayband area and possibly be of Anisian age. -The Espahk limestones, overlying transitionally the Shotori formation, are probably of Ladinian age. Microfauna and microfacies of the Espahk limestones and of the upper calcareous member of the Elika formation are very similar and suggest the stratigraphic equivalency of these units. -The Nayband formation which disconformably overlies the Espahk limestones contains upper Norian involutinids. In north Iran, the Nayband formation could be represented in part by the continental deposits of the basal Shemshak formation.
