Abstract

Brain stimulation is one of the palliative treatments explored for drug-resistant epilepsy in patients in whom surgery cannot be proposed. We present here deep brain-structure and cortical stimulations which were explored and we summarize the results of various studies applying this treatment modality. From these studies, it appears that the effectiveness of the brain stimulation to reduce seizures, although encouraging, is variable and the determinants of its effectiveness are not yet identified. These could be related to the variability of epileptic syndromes, the current paradigms of stimulation which are so far based principally on those used for abnormal movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, current technology which is not necessarily adapted to these targets
