Étude archéomagnétique d'un moule de cloche de l'église de Sainte-Marie, Disentis (Grisons)

Abstract

Nine oriented samples taken from the support of a bell mould in St. Mary's Church at Disentis Abbey (Graubünden) Switzerland exhibit a stable magnetization but with an appreciable scatter of the directions of the remanent magnetization. Storing the samples in zero magnetic field followed by a demagnetization in an alternating magnetic field shows that a small part of the dispersion of the directions is probably due to a slight deformation of the structure after cooling. Despite the poor quality of this archaeomagnetic site the mean direction of the remanent magnetization after demagnetization (Declination=3.4°; Inclination =55.7°) when placed on a standard curve of the secular variation of the geomagnetic field gives an age which is in good agreement with the presumed age of the bell mould (1400 A.D.).
