The spectral representation of a countable family of mutually permutable self-adjoint operators is established. It is compared with the representation obtained from the Gelfand isomorphism of an Abelian Banach algebra. The spectral representations as described here can serve as an adequate substitute for the so called «expansion postulate» of quantum mechanics.
