Abstract

Clitoral Politics Drawn with chalk on the sidewalks of our cities, brandished during demonstrations in support of women's rights, the clitoris is emerging as a new means of action and advocacy. The organ, long denied, ignored or repressed, asserts itself in the scientific and medical field as well as in the public and political arena. Showing it, as current knowledge describes it, is the way for women to reclaim their bodies, their sexuality and their history. What is the difference between the current full-size 3D clitoris, the infantile clitoris of the Freudian theory or the labia minora of the Renaissance? How and why measure, dissect, sew, circumcise, excise, repair or standardize the organ? Which clitoris for which sexuality but also which politics? Clitoris of yesterday and today, learned and profane clitoris, Western and ‘oriental', straight or queer clitoris, Delphine Gardey explores how the medical knowledge and practices shape and define the intimate experience of women: an issue of individual or collective struggle.
