Contemporary journalistic chronicles, or crónicas as they are known in the Spanish-speaking world, are a liminal, hybrid genre which navigates between literature and journalism, fact and fiction, the craft of the reportage and the formal freedom of the novel. Over the last decade, and particularly since the start of the so-called 'long summer of migration' in 2015, this under researched form of writing has become a dominant mode for reporting and (re)telling migration movements, an issue often reduced by mainstream media to storyless numbers and cold statistics. This dissertation examines the formal aspects of two chronicles, Valeria Luiselli's Tell Me How It Ends and Behrouz Boochani's No Friend but the Mountains, which respectively relate, and more importantly re-write, the so-called 'children immigration crisis' declared by the Obama administration in 2014, and the 'Stop the Boats' policy of the Australian goverment in 2013. The dissertation closely follows the '5W and the H' structure from journalism reporting.
