Some geochemical, geochronological and petrophysical data on the ophiolitic massif from the Kizil Dagh Hatay-Turkey

Publication date1975
Abstract

This research note presents geochemical, geochronological and petrophysical data on the ophiolites from the Kizil Dagh massif in the Hatay (Turkey). They are formed by tectonites, cumulates, a sheeted complex and pillow lavas. 27 new analyses show that the chemical composition of the ophiolites is in agreement with the hypothesis of a partially melted pyrolite giving rise to a magma produced by fractionation processes. The provisional dating by K-Ar of gabbros from the southern part of the massif gives a middle (112.8 ± 4.0 m.yr) to upper (69.0 ± 2. 7 m.yr) cretaceous age; this age must be interpreted in relation to the metamorphic history of these ophiolites. The magnetic properties (JNRM, X, Qn) of the tectonites, cumulates and sheeted complex are similar to those of the Troodos massif (Cyprus).
