Abstract

MIME is a research project on “the multilingual challenge for the European citizen” financed by the European Commission (EC) in Framework Programme No. 7 (FP7). It ran from 2014 through 2018. The MIME project has given rise to numerous outputs in the form of papers, lectures, conference panels, etc. (see www.mime-project.org for details), and the project results are summarized in several publications (Grin et al. 2018; Grin 2018a, 2018b). Given their availability elsewhere, these results need not be presented here beyond a few essential points. Rather, this paper focuses on the project’s philosophy, in order to highlight features that lend the project a specific profile among other research ventures on multilingualism and diversity, whether in the context of FP7 or more generally.
