Efficient airway management can be challenging in the austere and hostile prehospital environment. Securing the airway is however mandatory in case their patency or protection are acutely compromised. The objective of this narrative review is to present the most significant advances in prehospital airway management developed between 2016 and 2020. It is intended to supply all prehospital providers, regardless of their profession, with a critical appraisal of the scientific literature throughout this period. Using "prehospital airway management" as medical subject heading, 345 references were identified using PubMed®, and 79 articles were included and analysed. The results were categorized into four different sections: techniques and devices, confirmation and monitoring of correct device placement, avoidance of unnecessary endotracheal intubation, and teaching and learning. The outcomes, strengths, and shortcomings of these studies are described and the potential solutions which could be considered to avoid or address the limitations identified in the course of this review are discussed. Specific recommendations are made to help researchers to enhance the design of future prehospital studies.
