Abstract

A new issue from Amisos (RPC I 2156A) confirms that the coinage of Pontus with the fetiales (RPC I 2156) was also struck in Amisos. On the obverse, both issues bear a portrait of Caesar Octavian. The reverse of the new issue bears a portrait of the deified Caesar. It commemorates the liberation of the city by Caesar in 47, then by Caesar Octavian in 31-30. The fetiales issue illustrates the ritual of the treaty struck between Rome and Amisos, probably between 27 and 23. Two other contemporary issues from Amisos reflect the same events.
