X-ray Diffraction Study of the Superstructure Deformation due to Pb Substitution in Ca₂MnO₄

Abstract

During the preparation of Ca2MnO4 single crystals with PbO flux, Pb atoms substitute for both Ca and Mn atoms. Analysis of single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data gives the formula (Ca1.72Pb0.28)(Mn0.77Pb0.23)O4. Space group is I41/acd with a = 5.189 Å, c = 24.156 Å, and Z = 8. As compared to pure Ca2MnO4, the oxygen octahedra surrounding the Mn (or Pb) atoms are enlarged and slightly rotated, and weak superstructure reflections result.
