Abstract

Metallopolymers are a type of modern hybrid materials that are combining the advantageous properties of both classical metal complexes and organic materials. In this PhD thesis, we applied a bottom up approach to rationalize lanthanide loading of linear multisite receptors. Accordingly, series of the monomeric, dimeric, trimeric and polymer receptors have been synthesized based on the tridentate 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine unit. Then, NMR titration method have been applied to monitor the complexation reaction operating between ligands and neutral lanthanide container guests ([Ln(hfac)3], Ln = La, Eu, Lu). We have developed a thermodynamic model (The site binding model) based on statistical mechanics and applied it to explore the complexation reaction process in the oligomers and polymer. This study enabled us to predict the affinity for metal loading of any oligomers with a known number of repeating units.
