Abstract

This research examines the social inequalities in health experienced by women from migrant backgrounds as well as their access to perinatal care in Geneva. What are the main influential social determinants of health within this population? How does care provided by health professionals integrate newcomer women? To explore these questions, eight mothers from a migratory past were interviewed on the care of their pregnancy and childbirth in Geneva, with varying ethnicity such as Afghan, Albanian, Indian, Congolese or Iranian. Health professionals - doctors, nurses and midwives - also participated. The data was constructed through semi-structured interviews in which themes such as feelings, communication, decision-making power, life history and current life situation were questioned. The results are discussed according to the conceptual framework of the Commission of Social Determinants of Health and show that the Geneva care sector has only little influence on equal access to care, other political sectors are also influencers of health status. Anxiety and other depressive symptoms are worsened by the migration policy. There is little protection for undocumented workers, which leads to neglect of the health status of this population. All health professionals say they do not have the necessary background for quality care in this population.
