Abstract

The medical and social recognition and treatments of persistent pain vary according to the diagnosed diseases and the social, economic and family situations in which the affected persons find themselves. Some repetitions and disruptions underlying and common to the experiences of the women who participated in this research nevertheless make it possible to understand the entanglement of the biological, material, practical and structural aspects that shape the chronicity of their pain. Through Flora Weill's story, her painful trajectory and the social and therapeutic rhythms with which she deals, I highlight in four levels how people living with persistent pain may negotiate its chronicity. To understand the construction of chronicity, I focus on (1) the meanings and temporal representations attributed to persistent pain ; (2) the institutional structures that participate in the production of a dis-continuity (Barad 2003) between painful and non-painful bodies, (3) the practices that compose the continuous work of chronicity and (4) subjectivity.
