Abstract

Four combustion structures of the Late Bronze Age (LBA), three of which filled with fire-cracked rocks, were recently discovered during the rescue excavation of the Pré-du-Stand site (Grand-Saconnex, canton of Geneva). Charcoal analysis was performed in order to better understand firewood selection strategies at play in relation to these specific features. The results indicate a targeted selection of taxa available in the close environment, mainly oak, hazel and beech. The absence of fir, usually well-represented in the palynological records, as well as that of coniferous taxa in general, raise questions regarding their status: were they locally rare or disregarded as fuel? This study has allowed to shed light on fuel-related behaviors during the LBA in the Geneva region, which appear quite normalized when compared to regional or supra-regional data available for the Late Bronze and Early Iron ages. The increase of studies in comparable contexts will allow confirming, or on the contrary, refuting the first hypotheses proposed in this study.
