The prevalence of eating disorders (ED) in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) appears higher than in control populations, in particular the occurence of eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS). EDNOS coexisting with T1D are mostly found in teenage girls and young women. These patients suffer of restless weight and shape concerns and typically report intentional omission or underdosing of insulin for weight mana- gement purpose. Indeed, insulin misuse in individuals with T1D is included under the category of purging behaviours. Insulin omission is associated with acute and long-term diabetes complications. The most common being an increased rate of hospitalization for diabetic ketoacidosis, microvascular complications and suicide attempts. Diabetes care and diabetes burden seem to trigger genetic susceptibility factor to ED concomitantly with the psychosocial factors. It is critical for clinicians involved in the care of diabetic adolescents to understand more about eating disorders so as to improve the likelihood of early detection, appropriate treatment, and prevention of acute and long- term medical complications.
