Abstract

Schuilingite from Shinkolobwe (Shaba, Zaïre) associated with malachite, cerusite, talcchlorite, bornite, garnet, wulfenite, kasolite, native gold and gysinite, a new mineral with the formula Pb(Nd,La)(C0₃)₂(OH) • H₂O, is described. Orthorhombic (-) with α = 1.730, β = 1.770, γ = 1.795, schuilingite is transparent with an adamantine lustre. The cell parameters are: a = 7.43, b = 18.89, c = 6.40 Å. The space group is Pmcn. With Z = 2 and using the idealized formula, the calculated specific gravity is 4.59. Prominent X-ray diffraction lines (obs) occurs at: 9.46 Å (100) (020), 6.06 (90) (011), 4.797 (50) (130), 4.718 (60) (040), 4.487 (90) (031), 3.849 (90) (131), 2.932 (50) (240), 2.636 (40) (042) (161). Differences with other schuilingites are discussed.
