Following the symposium "Basement-cover relationships in the Alps" in Verbier, the excursion focuses on the Alpine structural evolution of the Briançonnais and Piémontais domains. Three tectonic processes involving basements and covers are illustrated along the Val d'Hérens section: 1) detachment of the Briançonnais covers along one or two Triassic evaporitic levels, 2) Alpine inversion and structuration of Permo-Carboniferous basins, 3) cover substitution on the peeled Briançonnais basements by slices of external Piemontais cover included into the thrusted Combin Zone.
