Abstract

In recent years, the European Union has faced a growing spread of Euroscepticism among its member states, as demonstrated by the Brexit and the latest European Parliament elections. This trend can be perfectly noticed in Italy, where right-wing Eurosceptic parties are currently leading the electoral polls despite the Europhile government. Eurobarometer data (2020) also confirm the general low attachment of Italian citizens to the EU, with 51% of Italian respondents affirming that they do not feel European. Promoting multilingualism is one of the main strategies implemented by the EU to foster the creation of a common European identity, as proficiency in foreign languages should encourage a greater sense of belonging with foreign people. Although, Italy is one of the member states with the lowest level of multilingualism. Thus, this research aims to analyse the possible connections between the low rate of multilingualism and the high level of Euroscepticism in Italy.
