Abstract

Faces are complex objects. They are formed of a constant structure: two eyes, a nose and a mouth organized in an outline. However, they offer uncountable possibilities to always form an individual face. How does the brain integrate the perceptive information of a face to build a representation? This question and more precisely the early steps of face encoding is our interest in this research, together with face components encoding. This study uses a new feature of a well-used electrophysiological component reflecting the structural encoding of faces, the N170. Towler & al. (2015) have shown that the N170 was triggered in a contralateral fashion depending on the position of the face displayed on screen. Therefore, the N170 seems to be position dependent and not larger on the right hemisphere, as it has been thought from decades. This finding provides a more precise way to measure the process that is underlined by the N170. But what about the sensitivity of the lateralized N170 to facial features? We aim to explore the impact of the main facial features processed (eyes, nose and mouth) on the lateralized N170.
