This study examines the three English translations of Rachilde's decadent novel Monsieur Vénus : roman matérialiste. Using the methodology presented in Lance Hewson's (2011) An Approach to Translation Criticism: Emma and Madame Bovary in Translation, a detailed textual analysis is performed in order to explore the extent to which the queer elements of this text carry over in each translation. The findings point to a diluting effect of this queerness through various normalizing and contractionary choices made by the translators. The purpose of this study is to provide future translators of queer, decadent literary texts with a roadmap reminding them of best-practices and possible pitfalls, as backed by the results of this analysis and the subsequent discussion thereof.
