Abstract

Systems biology is a multidisciplinary field of research that applies a holistic approach to enhance the understanding of biological systems, for which a global snapshot of molecules and corresponding pathways can be acquired to establish networks of interacting genes, transcripts, proteins and metabolites, including lipids. This approach rose to prominence with its pivotal role in The Human Genome Project which began in 2003, where a vast amount of genetic information was identified and mapped in a biochemical context to functionally assign a complete set of interacting genes, known as the genome (1). Recent developments in science and technology gave rise to the ‘omics' era, continuing from genomics, and producing additional sets of data on the organismal transcriptome, proteome, polar metabolome and lipidome. This multi-omics technology provides a high-throughput and cost-efficient means of data acquisition in the context of metabolic networks, to provide a more comprehensive exploration of disease pathogenesis (2). Integrative omics could unveil new pathways and biomarkers to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of metabolic diseases with complex etiology.
