Geochronological interpretation of the Troodos sheeted dyke complex

Abstract

Eleven new whole-rock K-Ar measurements were obtained on dykes from the Troodos sheeted complex. Combined with data of Desmet et al. (1978) they yield an isochron age of 83 ± 3 m.y. (earliest Campanian). No excess argon was detected. One hypothesis to explain the 8 m.y. difference in the isochron ages of dykes and lavas may be a rejuvenation of the lavas owing to their particular alteration. The Campanian age of the Troodos sheeted dyke complex is not a common feature to all sheeted complexes in the eastern Mediterranean area, as shown in Hatay and Crete.
