Trace and rare earth element abundances in Troodos lavas and sheeted dikes, Cyprus

Abstract

Various generations and units of dikes and lavas have been analyzed for trace and rare earth elements. Diabases and dolerites in the sheeted complex are related to the lavas from the Basal Group and from the Lower Pillow-Lavas in their Zr, Ni, Co and Cr contents. Picritic dikes have similar amounts of trace elements to the Upper Pillow-Lavas, especially the ultrabasic pillows. The last metabasaltic dikes have lower amounts of Ni, Cr and Co, but higher amounts of Ti than the basaltic Upper Pillow-Lavas. Rare earth patterns in the diabases and in the Lower Pillow-Lavas are similar. It appears that the trace and rare earth element contents do not give any definite answer to the disputed question of the ocean ridge versus island arc origin.
