The geochronology of both plutons of Rize and Gümüsane (N-E Anatolia, Turkey) is investigated by three different methods: K-Ar on biotites, total lead and radiation damage on zircons. The obtained data prove the field work hypothesis that the pluton of Rize is Tertiary (30-55 m.y.) and that Gümüsane is much older (300-340 m.y.) thus belonging to the Variscan-Hercynian orogeny.
