This paper is a contribution to the flourishing comparative historical literature on the development of American and European federal macroeconomic government institutions. This literature was spawned by the 2010-12 Eurozone crisis, during which policy-oriented scholars sought to draw lessons from American political history for the European Union. However, these contributions face a major methodological issue, namely periodization. In this paper, I argue that the most relevant comparison is between the first half of the 20th century for the United States and the period beginning in the last quarter of that century for the European Union. The reason for this is the underlying and profound socio-economic process of the corporate reconstruction of American and European capitalisms, which I identify as the root cause of the development of federal macroeconomic government institutions in both polities. Cet article est une contribution à la littérature historico-comparative en pleine expansion sur le développement des institutions fédérales de gouvernement macroéconomique américaines et européennes. Cette littérature a été suscitée par la crise de la zone euro de 2010-12, durant laquelle des chercheurs policy-oriented voulurent tirer des leçons pour l'Union européenne de l'histoire politique américaine. Cependant, ces contributions rencontrèrent un problème métho¬dologique majeur, à savoir la périodisation. Dans cet article, je soutiens que la comparaison la plus pertinente est entre la première moitié du XXe siècle pour les Etats-Unis et la période qui démarre durant le dernier quart du même siècle pour l'Union européenne. La raison pour cela est le macro-processus socio-économique sous-jacent de la reconstruction corporate des capi¬talismes américain et européen, que j'identifie comme la cause première du développement d'institutions fédérales de gouvernement macroéconomiques dans les deux communautés politiques.
