Radiometric dates of Calabria-Lucania ophiolites (Southern Italy) and associated continental rocks

Abstract

Radiometric datings of the Calabria-Lucania ophiolites (Southern Italy) are very scarce up to now (only two K-Ar ages), nor radiometric data on associated terrains affected by Alpine metamorphism and orogeny are more numerous (only two ages). To date the different events of the Alpine history, 40 K-Ar age determinations (on total rock and concentrated minerals) on ophiolites and associated continental rocks from the lower crust are presented and discussed. The analyzed ophiolite samples include: 1) metabasalts with monophase orogenic metamorphism under sub-greenschist conditions; 2) metabasalts and metagabbros showing a polyphase multi-stage metamorphism dominated by: 2a) blueschist assemblages overprinted by greenschist associations; 2b) lawsonite-albite assemblages with a similar overprinting; 2c) late greenschist assemblages; 2d) very low-grade and high-pressure assemblages without apparent overprinting; 3) metapelites from the sedimentary cover of metabasalts (group 2b). The analyzed continental rocks include: 4) amphibolites displaying weak effects of low-grade Alpine metamorphism; 5) amphibolites partially recrystallized under high-pressure and low-temperature conditions. The following total rock ages were determined: 51 Ma for group 1 of ophiolites, 26 to 57 Ma for groups 2 and 3, with relatively older ages for the 2a and 2b groups. Older (up to 92 Ma) and younger (20 Ma) ages were measured on blue amphiboles and on chlorite, respectively. Isochron plots give ages of 27 Ma and 28 Ma. For amphibolites, total rock ages are of 83-228 Ma (group 4) and 52-93 Ma (group 5). Datings of amphiboles are systematically older with a large spread (128-224 Ma). For most analyzed ophiolites, the cluster of ages around the Oligocene indicates an isotopic re-equilibration event related with the Apennine orogeny. For the continental rocks, the Triassic ages could represent either cooling ages for a late Hercynian metamorphic event, or mixed ages related with an Alpine rejuvenation.
