Abstract

A sermon by Etienne of Tournai for Pentecost, on a lemma from The Book of Wisdom 1:5, defines the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit by comparing them either to the exact opposite vice or to the vice of feigning one particular gift. This text, most representative of the style of Etienne of Tournai, is one of his few to have had a wide and lasting reception, and was even attributed to Petrarch. It is here edited from all known manuscripts.
