Abstract

ABSTRACT Any analysis of Genesis 34 needs to be placed alongside that of Genesis 49,5-7. When that is done, it is possible to distinguish two opposite interpretations of the story of the rape of Dinah and the massacre of the Shechemites. The first version of the story envisages a normalization or regularization of the ilIegitimate relations between Shechem and Dinah and condemns the intransigence of Simeon and Levi. This version of events emanates from a circle which favoured marriages with Gentiles and which criticised the pretensions of the tribe of Levi. The second version condones the violence perpetrated by the two sons of Jacob; it is to be set in the era of Ezra-Nehemiah, in a milieu which sought to prohibit mixed marriages.
