Contextual effects on the perception of emotions from different expressive modalities

Abstract

This research has the main objective of demonstrating the usefulness and ecologic validity of expressive variables such as the voice and dynamic faces as well as the influence of contextual scenes, to improve the study of positive and negative emotions. For that, the accuracy rates of emotion categorization of 64 participants were tested, within three types of different stimuli. One in which only the voice and a congruent or incongruent social scene was presented, the second one in which only a dynamic facial expression within a congruent or incongruent social scene was presented and the third one in which a dynamic facial emotion expression with voice within a congruent or incongruent social scene was presented. We were able to demonstrate that in general when participants had access to a bimodal condition as compared to the unimodal Voice only condition, emotions were better recognized...
