Effect of Endomycorrhizal Infection on Root System Topology of Platanus Acerifolia

Abstract

Topological analysis was used in order to investigate root system development and the influence of a vesicular-arbuscular (VA) endomycorrhizal infection in Platanus acerifolia, a very common tree species in urban environments. Significantly different topological patterns were found: root systems infected by VA fungi showed in fact a more pronounced dichotomous-like structure than the non-mycorrhizal controls. Hypotheses are formulated on the functional meaning of these effects.
