Projective consciousness and optimization of escape in virtual reality

Abstract

The Projective Consciousness Model (PCM) is a mathematical model of embodied consciousness that highlights the role of perspective-taking in the optimization of resilience by integrating active inference with projective geometry. In this experiment, we aimed to investigate the effects of uncertainty and uncertainty reduction through perspective-taking, in contexts with different levels of stress, on the behavioral and affective response during a navigation task in virtual reality, while developing virtual paradigms for the study of perspective-taking in affective sciences and further investigations of the PCM. Results indicated that the presence of a stressor was associated with higher anxiety, while the reduction of uncertainty through perspective-taking facilitated optimal navigation and decreased subjective anxiety in anticipation of the task—this effect being mediated by subjective certainty. We found no evidence for an effect of stressor or uncertainty reduction on physiological measures of anxiety. These findings are consistent with the important role given to subjective experience and perspective-taking in the optimization of resilience in the PCM.
