Antisocial behaviors (AB) refer to manifestations that violate the norms of the society and the rights of other people. Our work aims to investigate different psychological processes, such as reflective functioning (RF), empathy, emotion recognition, perspective taking, and source monitoring, in a group of community adolescents (CA) and a group of incarcerated adolescents (IA). Our results suggest that low RF is are present both IA and CA presenting high levels of AB. Good RF capacities predict a faster decrease in the AB level during adolescence and young adulthood. Furthermore, compared to the CA, the IA present impairments in the recognition of complex emotional expressions and in perspective taking abilities, as well as biases in the monitoring of the source of self-generated information. Overall, our studies suggest that AB are associated with impairments in the processing of one's own and others' affective and cognitive mental states in order to explain behaviors.
