Archaeological investigations of the Celtic sanctuary (tumulus 39) of the eastern necropolis of the Sboryanovo national reserve

Publication date2019
Abstract

The investigations of the Celtic sanctuary, a continuation of the Bulgarian-Swiss project “Sboryanovo – necropolises and territory”, were provided with the financial support of the Swiss-Liechtenstein Foundation for Archaeological Research Abroad (SLSA) and “Erasmus+”. The investigations of the sanctuary with a trapezoidal plan and area of 840 m2 (Fig. 1) localized its northeastern corner (Fig. 2), the northern and the eastern ditch and a part of the main entrance. The ditch with a width of 6 – 10 m in its upper part and 1.90 – 2.20 m at the bottom at a depth of 1 – 1.20 m had originally vertical walls. Earlier and later structures – post holes and a deposit of ceramics (Fig. 3), fragments of handmade and wheelmade Thracian pottery, imported amphorae and unidentified iron objects were found in the trenches. The date of the sanctuary remains around 200 BC. The finalization of the investigations of the sanctuary – the only one of this type in present-day Bulgaria – would throw important light on its character.
