Abstract

This review of the syrphid fauna of the canton of Geneva details 15 additions to the Geneva list, 5 of them being also new for Switzerland [Mallota fuciformis (Fabricius, 1794), Melangyna quadrimaculata (Verrall, 1873), Merodon moenium (Wiedemann, 1822), Microdon mutabilis (L., 1758), Pocota personata (Harris, 1780)]. Seven species are removed from the Geneva list, 9 are recognized as probably extinct in the canton and the occurrence in the canton of a further 12 spe- cies requires confirmation. The occurrence of 211 syrphid species within the canton during the last 150 years is confirmed, for 131 of which there are records since 2000. It is suggested that further survey, particularly of natural/semi-natural habitat areas within the canton, would add further to knowledge of the cantonal syrphid list.
