Abstract

We study the fundamental physical properties of LaNiO3, a correlated transition metal oxide, within the context of heterostructures. In this thesis we report on an intriguing thickness-dependence of the resistivity in the ultrathin limit, a strong dependence on the substrate lattice of the structure and a novel idea to apply the physics of so-called "negative U" insulators to the rare earth nickelates.
