Planktonic triangular Goniochloris-like algae from several waters in Germany were investigated by LM, SEM and TEM. The morphology of the cells, the ultrastructure and variability of cell wall precipitation were described and taxonomical conclusions discussed. The new genus Pseudogoniochloris has been set up. It differs from Goniochloris in its cell wall sculpture. The new combination Pseudogoniochloris tripus (PASCHER) KRIENITZ, HEGEWALD, REYMOND et PESCHKE includes the following taxa as synonyms: Goniochloris contorta (BOURR.) ETTL, G. fallax FOTT and G. smithii BOURR.
