Abstract

In the course of systematic studies on superconducting Tl( 1223) tapes, partial substitution of oxygen by fluorine was investigated. It was found that the presence of fluorine not only decreases the formation and melting temperatures of the Tl(1223) phase but also extends the temperature range favourable for grain growth. Magnetic measurements showed a significant increase of the irreversibility field at temperatures below ~75 K for the F-containing tapes, whereas, at temperatures close to Tc the F-free samples exhibited lower field dependence. Transport critical current densities of 10'000 A/cm² (77 K, 0T) were reached for F-free and F-containing tapes, the magnetic field dependence being reduced for the latter.
