Abstract Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) despite modern technology and careful metabolic control. The occurrence of dyslipidemia is frequent with T1DM and affects the risk for cardiovascular disease as occur with the occurrence of micro vascular complications. Lifestyle modifications and statin treatment should be regularly evaluated in patients with T1DM. There has been extensive discussion in the media about statin but facts are statins reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in primary and secondary prevention. In individuals with T1DM, dyslipidemia remains underdiagnosed and insufficiently treated. This article provides a summary of the knowledge about dyslipidemia and T1DM and aims to better identify the patients that should be treated.
