New role for Nucleosome Assembly Proteins (AtNAPs) in regulating hypocotyl growth and chlorophyll accumulation in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract

NAP proteins engage in nucleo-cytosolic shuttling of histones H2A/H2B and plant NAPs and NAP-related proteins (NRP1 and NRP2) have previously been implicated in DNA repair in response to genotoxic stress. We report a novel role for NAPs (NAP1;1, NAP1;2, NAP1;3 and NAP1;4) as positive regulators of etiolated hypocotyl growth in young Arabidopsis seedlings. This role seems to be restricted to the seedling stage as adult mutant plants were not strongly perturbed in growth and development. The striking short hypocotyl phenotype of dark-grown nap triple mutants (a mutation in NAP1;1, NAP1;2, and NAP1;3) was associated with many transcriptional changes some of which included a lower expression of cell elongation genes, as ascertained by our RNA Sequencing data. We also found that NAPs play a role in the transition from dark to light.
