Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the impact of emotion and arousal on the subjective sense of remembering intrinsic compared to extrinsic detail. We presented emotional and neutral images to participants in an encoding task. At the recognition task, subjects were asked to make written responses for images judged as « remember », in which contextual details could be recalled, or « know » which were not accompanied by subjective recollection. Our results revealed higher « remember » responses for emotional vs. neutral scenes, confirming the emotional enhancement of memory. Critically, we observed higher intrinsic contextual details for emotional vs. neutral remembered images, and higher extrinsic detail for neutral vs. emotional recollected images...
