Abstract

Contrary to what has happened to common Arab roots, Berberism in Tunisia has been somewhat forgotten and delegitimised of its importance – almost incorporated and catalogued with the concept of a homogeneous national identity. The country thus experienced a dichotomy: the plurality of the composition of the society on the one hand and the need to maintain and emphasise Arab uniqueness on the other. Simultaneously, Tunisia has for several years been undergoing a change of perspective linked mainly to the events that have affected the country and which have indeed extended the possibility to participate in political and cultural life. This article aims at reconstructing the development of the Amazigh issue through a historical excursus starting from 1956 – the year of independence – until today, paying particular attention to the changes of 2011.
