An experiment was conducted with 10 interpreting students or former students who were asked to simultaneous interpret two English speeches in two conditions: noisy and quiet. All participants interpreted into their native languages (French, Italian, and Spanish). The aim of the experiment was to assess whether background noise influences the accuracy of SI. Results indicate that background noise significantly impairs accuracy in SI performances. Participants made more meaning errors under noisy conditions, and these errors were also more severe. These findings underscore the importance of considering environmental factors in understanding and assessing simultaneous interpreting quality.
