It is divided into four chapters which propose to map out Wittig’s theoretical and literary journey in the infernal circles of the straight mind. Throughout the work, I consider the elements of Robert Darnton’s communication circuit to analyse how their profiles contributed to shape the history of Wittig’s book. I outline the formation of queer theory around the concept of gender, and I rely on feminist and queer approaches to translation for analysing the texts. I demonstrate how the translators’ habitus influences their stylistic choices and how criticisms of Wittig’s theory fueled her success and the diffusion of a lesbian subjectivity. Wittig has accomplished a profound subversion of the paradigms of the heterosexual regime that subtend reality and has enabled us to understand it beyond identity constructions and oppressive relations.
