This study argues that in times of crisis, translators play a far more complex role, including many external parameters than in an ordinary brief: they become facilitators of understanding, emotional intermediaries, and ethical decision-makers. The research is grounded in Skopos Theory, a functionalist approach that emphasizes the purpose of translation over literal fidelity. This theoretical framework allows for a more realistic understanding of the translator’s actions under pressure in crisis times, especially when conveying sensitive or life-saving information to vulnerable populations. The study combines theoretical insights with qualitative fieldwork, specifically through two in-depth interviews with experienced humanitarian translators. These interviews revealed that translators in crisis settings face a range of challenges — linguistic (terminology, dialects), cultural (taboos, values), ethical (neutrality vs. intervention), and psychological (secondary trauma, emotional fatigue). Findings show that translators are often underprepared for such roles and lack institutional support or adequate training. Therefore, the thesis recommends the development of specialized training programs, the creation of ethical guidelines for emergency contexts, and the formal integration of translators into crisis response teams. Ultimately, this study calls for a shift in how we perceive translators — not merely as language professionals, but as strategic actors in humanitarian communication and crisis management.
