Addressing these issues demands substantial global investments. Wealthier nations have pledged to fund mitigation and adaptation initiatives in developing countries. However, the repeated failure of developed countries to deliver on these promises has elicited calls for a reform of the climate finance architecture to better integrate the needs of developing countries. In light of this, this study analyzes the climate finance needs and priorities of developing countries and explores the role played by the South Centre in this landscape. The study was enriched by an internship at the South Centre. Key Findings: 1. Climate finance needs and priorities for developing countries: Key climate finance priorities identified include reinforcing UNFCCC principles, establishing an operational definition of climate finance, enhancing access to climate finance, improving transparency and accountability arrangements, setting ambitious climate finance goals, and amplifying capacity-building across several dimensions. 2. South Centre’s climate finance support to developing countries: The climate finance contribution of the South Centre encompasses research publications, active participation in climate negotiations, as well as a tangible capacity-building project. 3. Areas of improvement for the South Centre: Active participation in climate finance negotiations, amplified engagement in capacity-building projects and enhanced outreach are areas demanding more commitment. 4. Opportunities for the South Centre: The South Centre is in an optimal position to capture the collective climate finance views of Southern nations and guide them through the ongoing negotiations to define a new international climate finance goal. 5. Challenges for the South Centre: Challenges confronting the South Centre include overcoming funding constraints and rebuilding damaged relationships and trust with member nations. Summary of recommendations: 1- The South Centre is urged to not only increase its active participation in climate negotiations but also to provide post-negotiation insights and tools, like policy briefs, that represent and support the unique perspectives and needs of developing nations. 2- Collaborative efforts through partnerships, capacity building, and knowledge exchange further underline the Centre's potential as a hub for uniting and empowering developing countries. 3- By amplifying its visibility and fostering more frequent communication with developing countries, the South Centre can reinforce trust, inclusivity, and its influence in championing the interests of the Global South within the climate finance domain.
