L'auteur a étudié l'interprétation consécutive pratiquée avec des note par quatre interprètes en formation. L'intervalle entre l'écoute du discours source et le début de la prise de note (ear-pen span - intervalle oreille-stylo) a été utilisé comme approximation de la charge cognitive. L'intervalle étant plus court pour la prise de notes en mots qu'en symboles pour tou.te.s les interprètes, ce qui implique une charge cognitive moins importante pour les mots. L'intervalle était plus long pour les abréviations que pour les mots, éventuellement parce que la sélection ou la création des abréviations a généré une charge cognitive plus importante. Quand les notes prenaient la forme de symboles, la structure syntactique de l'interprétation reflétait l'original dans à peu près la moitié des cas, ce qui implique que la structure superficielle est régulièrement utilisée dans la restitution même quand les notes représentent le sens. <p>This thesis tests the hypothesis that interpretation based on meaning is likely to be more cognitively demanding than interpretation based on the words and syntax of the original (surface structure). This is because in the former case surface structure must be processed and then meaning identified, while the second step is absent from the latter approach. Four student interpreters performed consecutive interpretation with notes and the time lag between hearing the input and the start of notation (ear-pen span) was taken as a proxy for cognitive load. All interpreters had a lower ear-pen span when noting words than when encoding meaning in symbols, suggesting that cognitive load was lower for words. The ear-pen span for abbreviations was longer than for words, perhaps because selection or creation of abbreviations increased cognitive load.
