However, AA biases have not yet been characterized in this population. The present dissertation investigates the feasibility of assessing approach-avoidance biases in a pilot sample of young people who self-harm before completing the full sample (n=100) and associate them to mental imagery and motivation to regulate self-harm behaviour.<i> </i>It was hypothesised that people who self-harm (SH) would show an automatic avoidance bias to self-harm stimuli to a greater extent than healthy controls (HCs), while those who also experience positive emotions from self-harm related mental imagery would show an automatic approach bias to the same stimuli. We examined AA tendencies in a community sample of individuals aged 16-25, who were allocated to the HC group (n=10) and the SH group (n=4). Using a computerized feedback-joystick task with displays of pictures of hobbies (positive), neutral images, and pictures of self-harm, we recorded reaction times (RTs) as our primary research outcome. In comparison with control and positive stimuli, self-harm stimuli seem to elicit an automatic avoidance bias in both HCs and SH participants, with a potential higher intensity in the SH group. Present findings from this pilot sample shows a trend that could be in the direction of our hypothesis, although we are unable to confirm it due to the very small sample size as of now. Confirmation of these findings in the full sample of participants is imperative, and further investigations could be required to better understand the role of mental imagery and implicit AA and help develop more effective interventions for young people with repetitive self-harm. Les processus cognitifs implicites tels que l'approche et l'évitement (AA) sont fondamentaux pour comprendre les mécanismes qui maintiennent l’automutilation répétitive chez les jeunes personnes. Cependant, les biais AA n'ont pas encore été caractérisés dans cette population. Le présent travail étudie la possibilité d'évaluation des biais d'approche et d'évitement dans un échantillon pilote de jeunes personnes qui s'automutilent, avant d’obtenir l'échantillon complet (n=100), et de les associer à l'imagerie mentale et à la motivation pour réguler le comportement d'automutilation. Nous avons émis l'hypothèse que les personnes qui s'automutilent (SH) présenteraient un biais d'évitement automatique des stimuli d'automutilation plus significatif que les témoins sains (HC), tandis que celles qui ressentent également des émotions positives à partir de l'imagerie mentale liée à l'automutilation présenteraient un biais d'approche automatique de ces mêmes stimuli. Nous avons examiné les tendances AA dans un échantillon communautaire d'individus âgés de 16 à 25 ans, répartis entre le groupe HC (n=10) et le groupe SH (n=4). À partir d'une tâche informatisée de feedback-joystick avec affichage d'images d’activités (positives), d'images neutres et d'images d'automutilation, nous avons enregistré les temps de réaction (RT) comme principal résultat technique de recherche. En comparaison avec les stimuli positifs et neutres, les stimuli d'automutilation semblent susciter un biais d'évitement automatique à la fois chez les HC et les SH, avec une intensité potentiellement plus élevée dans le groupe SH. Les résultats actuels de cet échantillon pilote montrent une tendance qui nous ferait tendre vers l’hypothèse, bien que nous ne soyons pas en mesure de le confirmer en raison de la très petite taille de l'échantillon pour le moment. La validation de ces résultats dans l'échantillon complet de participants est impérative, et des investigations supplémentaires pourraient être nécessaires pour mieux comprendre le rôle de l'imagerie mentale et de l'AA implicite et aider à développer des interventions plus efficaces pour les jeunes qui s'automutilent de manière répétitive.
