Affective states such as joy and sadness are suggested to have opposing perceptual processing mechanisms. Using a virtual reality environment, this study examined whether these underlying mechanisms may influence a perceiver's response to external stimuli on a behavioral level. Reaction time of responses were measured across visual, auditory and tactile modalities and an effect of mood state was found only when accounting for individualized differences such as gender. These findings may substantiate evidence on the significance of the perceiver's subjective experience when examining the external environment. Accounting for individualized differences is crucial to understanding the interactions between affect and perceptual processing. This information may allow for better knowledge on future therapeutic and diagnostic approaches when dealing with those vulnerable to developing psychopathologies.
